During volatile, changing agricultural times, one of the most important things producers can do is surround themselves with good information. The Rabbe Companies have in our midst a knowledgeable source of agronomic and genetic information in Research Director, Dr. Grant Metz. Dr. Metz will be publishing information on a monthly basis in his Notes from the Pod Doctor series of articles. You will find the first in the series following this brief introduction of Dr. Metz.
Grant Metz grew up on a wheat and cattle farm in North Dakota. He began showing aptitude for plant genetics very early on when, as a senior in high school, he competed at the National Science Fair, where he presented a project that involved raising seeds (including soybeans) along a magnetic field. Grant earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy from North Dakota State University in Fargo, and then his Master of Science and PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Iowa State University in Ames. During his undergraduate and graduate studies, he was a member of Alpha Zeta and Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternities. He also published three research articles in Crop Science, a journal that serves the international community of crop scientists.
After completing his PhD, Dr. Metz opened corn breeding stations for Garst Seed Co. in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, and for Golden Harvest Seed Co. in Dansville, Michigan. While at Garst, Dr. Metz helped develop a plant breeding information system that was a model for an information system very popular in the industry today. Dr. Metz has served as a coordinator of European and North American researchers. In that role, Dr. Metz was able to build international relationships, realizing a global perspective that has allowed him to understand the world outside the United States and Puerto Rico where he conducts his own research.
Since 2006, Dr. Metz has served as the Research Director for Galena Genetics, LLC, one of the Rabbe Companies. Dr. Metz is one of an elite group of researchers working to breed and develop non-genetically modified soybean varieties, and we are fortunate to have a professional with his aptitude and experience on our team.
